I wish I had known about this site before last December, We don't live that far from SLC and go there quite often. I would have loved to have been at the Family History Library on Dec 2nd! Now we are a long ways away as my husband and I are serving South Pacific island, Vanuatu Port Vila Mission for a 23 month mission. We left in January so will be released and home in December 2016Smile.

Descendants of Silas Smith (1779-1839) may not be aware of a special connection to Hyrum Smith. Hyrum was on the Kirtland Temple Committee.
In 1835, the ever obedient Hyrum was sent on two separate assignments to try and gather funds from surrounding branches of the church to try and help the debt created from building the temple. He went to Potsdam and Stockholm, NY on his second trip.
Hyrum was influential in helping Grandfather Silas enter the waters of baptism. Said he, "Uncle Silas,...the Lord has sent me to baptize you, for the Lord has seen the integrity of your heart but knows your fears with regards to your family but you need not suffer any anxiety about them for if you embrace the Gospel it will be the means of saving them." Silas, Elias & Martha (his Uncle Asael Jr.'s children) were all baptized by Hyrum on 27 August 1835.
Silas had 7 children with his first wife Ruth Stevens. These would be the children Hyrum was referring to. What is neat to think about is that Hyrum would have most likely seen and associated with Silas's two young sons from his second marriage: Silas Sanford and John Aikens. He also most likely saw 9 month old baby Jesse Nathaniel. Pretty neat to think about that experience! Hyrum's boldness helped and through the priesthood he carried, he performed the necessary ordinances for our forefather.

Nathan thank you for sharing more of the story of Silas Smith's conversion and baptism. Where did you find the information on this event?

Hello Wonderful Cousins.

Our Cousin, Joseph Fielding McConkie, before he passed away, wrote a wonderful article on "The Early Smiths of Topsfield". Since we share a common heritage through Joseph Smith, I found this a wonderful read. It talks about Grandpa Jesse's Grandpas from Robert Smith down through Asael Smith. He was invited by the Topsfield Congregational Church to present this paper. When you read, you will learn and appreciate the character of Grandpa Jesse through the eyes of his ancestors and have a new gratitude for what made him tick.

Thank you

smile Thanks again everyone for a wonderful 2 days of celebrating Grandpa Jesse's 180th birthday. He enjoyed being doded upon a bit on his birthdays the older he got. I felt his spirit today and I'm sure he appreciated the families remembering him and his contributions. This is probably how we hope our kids feel about us "dont forget about me after I'm gone". I have learned a great deal from YOU, the family members, about the importance of sharing our stories and keeping our histories to pass one. Someone, Someday, Somehow, they will be valued [/b]
